When does a sprinkler system need a fire pump?

A fire pump increases water pressure, making it an essential component of a sprinkler system in some scenarios. For example, pressure demand for a high rise building or a large warehouse could exceed available water supply. A fire pump boosts the system to support adequate protection.

Chapter 8 of NPFA 15, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, outlines specific requirements, including maintenance schedules – usually weekly or monthly depending on the type of fire pump, with an annual flow test – and record-keeping requirements.
