Night clubs, dance halls, and music venues have experienced serious fires with loss of life over several decades. The lack of automatic sprinkler protection has been noted as a contributing factor.

The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code for 2021 requires sprinkler protection for new construction restaurant occupancies. Existing construction assembly occupancies such as stand-alone restaurants would not require sprinkler protection. However, if it is a dance hall, night club, etc. with an occupant load over 100, sprinklers are required.
