What are examples of specific guidance provided by NFPA 909 and NFPA 914?

NFPA 909 discusses protection of “compact storage systems.” These could be dense storage of cultural resources, meaning bookshelves and files. This would include solid shelves with limited or no vertical flu space that could inhibit traditional automatic sprinklers.
The standard provides an alternative to the strict interpretation of sprinkler requirements. A comprehensive risk assessment of the specific storage system would be done, identifying unique fire threats presented for each collection.
Alternative fire protection strategies, such as use of metal barriers and designating maximum storage height, could be instituted. While not usually needed, the installation of pre-action or dry pipe sprinkler systems could minimize water damage while providing adequate fire suppression capabilities.
NFPA 914 prioritizes preservation of the historic integrity and fabric of the building. It could encourage strategic placement of smoke detectors in place of a full sprinkler system where piping installation could damage historic materials. The code works in close conjunction with NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations.
